Two Indiana dairy farmers will soon trade in the sound the cows mooing for engines roaring, we are not talking about tractor engines here…
On Sunday, May 24th, Sam Schwoeppe and Franklin Weaver, both Indiana dairy farmers, will be delivering the coveted Bottle of Milk to the winner of the 93rd Indy 500. According to the press release, the tradition of drinking milk after the race began in 1933 when legendary Louis Meyer asked for a glass of his favorite beverage -buttermilk- to quench his thirst after the long race.
Meyer later became Indy’s first three-time winner, taking the checkered flag in 1928, ’33, and ’36. After his 1936 win Meyer was photographed in Victory Lane drinking milk, and in 1956 the Bottle of Milk was made a permanent fixture of the victory celebration by Indianapolis Motor Speedway owner Anton “Tony” Hulman.
Schwoeppe and Weaver are both very honored to be taking part in the tradition this year and appreciate all the support they have received from everyone involved. Make sure to tune in and see these two Hoosier dairy farmers deliver the Bottle of Milk, courtesy of the American Dairy Association of Indiana.
