Wednesday, July 15, 2009:
One has to “pick and choose” just a bit when looking for the good rainfall totals in the western Corn Belt since yesterday morning. Radar suggests that extreme northeastern South Dakota through central Minnesota is one area that got some nice rains; within that area, I can confirm about 1.25″ at St. Cloud. Another area would be east-central South Dakota southeastward across southwestern Minnesota and northeastern Iowa; from those rains I can confirm better than an inch of rain at Waterloo and Mason City, with around two-thirds of an inch at Worthington and Fairmont. A final area of rain was found in southeastern Iowa near the Missouri border; from those rains I can confirm better than an inch of rain at Burlington (with several counties under flash- flood warnings early today). It is that final area of rain that was moving rapidly eastward into the Illinois/Indiana border area early today. One can tell from the above description that more places got “missed” in the western Corn Belt than got “hit” with rains since yesterday morning. That is disappointing for especially southeastern Minnesota and central through much of eastern Nebraska, two areas that really would have appreciated a nice rain.
At least we will be able to get some rain into drier parts of northern Indiana early today. For the bulk of the Corn Belt, this is not an especially wet weather pattern coming up. Additional rain for the rest of the work-week will be in southern and eastern parts of the region, and even there does not look especially heavy. Beyond that, we will likely see some rain in the northwestern Corn Belt for Monday night through early Wednesday of next week, but big amounts do not look especially likely. It will be the Delta region seeing the best rainfall relief coming up, with solid rainfall chances there for the rest of this work-week. Most notable about weather coming up is still the temperatures, which still look quite cool for the end of this week through early next week (still believe there will be at least one day in that period in which highs fail to get above 70 degrees in northeastern parts of the Midwest). Temperatures will return to more normal levels for the middle of next week, but look to turn cooler again for July 25 and beyond.
