Thursday, October 15, 2009:
Severe losses for corn and soybean markets overnight might suggest to some that the weather for harvesting those crops in the Delta and the Corn Belt has suddenly improved, but overall things look about the same as they did yesterday. Rainfall the past 24 hours in the Corn Belt was not heavy, but was certainly widespread and rain continued to fall early today from central Minnesota southeastward into Ohio (with radar not detecting the drizzle that was falling in a lot of the rest of the region). The biggest rains for the Corn Belt and Delta are behind us, but a real good drying day is still a couple days away. Light rain and drizzle looks to be a common sight today for the Midwest and northern Delta, with rains of a more significant nature (though for the most part not heavy) for the southern Delta. Tomorrow still looks to be a day with a lot of cloud cover with some widely scattered very light showers in especially the Corn Belt. Look for Saturday to be a truly dry day for most of the Nation’s midsection, with some sunshine starting to be seen. It still looks like fantastic weather for Sunday and Monday of next week, and I would still call the weather in that period as the best we have had so far this autumn.
Sunshine should be abundant, there should be a fair amount of wind, and temperatures will turn much warmer to create near-optimal drying conditions for that period. Tuesday may not be a bad day either for a lot of areas, but rain should start to break out that day in western parts of the region and we are still looking at a widespread rain event for the Delta and Corn Belt for the middle to latter parts of next week. Weather models are still not in good agreement on how that weather will play out exactly, but I would think that at some point most everyone gets rain from that system. It will probably dry out in the western Corn Belt by no later than October 23, and in the eastern Corn Belt by no later than October 24. There are signs of a fresh weather system for October 26 or October 27. Before we get to the warmth of Sunday/Monday, Sunday morning still looks to be a cold morning with lows to the freezing mark into the Ohio Valley and some frost possible in the northern Delta.
