After the popular Facebook game Farm Town hit the scene, there have been several other farming games that have gotten popular over the last few months.
I recently discovered Youda Farmer on Alltech’s Kidzone, but this game is not just great for teaching the youngsters about food, farming, and the process that has to occur before food can end up on the tables in our homes.
The game begins at a very basic level, and gets increasingly more complex as the farmer completes levels with specific tasks. First the farmer only grows crops, then he sells them to the merchants in the town, then their orders get more complex and larger to meet the needs of their customers. While the game takes it down to a very basic level, the premise is very similar to the actual “gate to plate” farming process.
While these games are meant to be a source of fun and entertainment, they can also be much more than that. They allow people who may not normally be exposed to the “farming process” to have the opportunity to do so. These games are a great source of educational information that can easily be incorporated into a classroom curriculum, Scout meeting, or any similar situation.
Make sure to check out this, and other games that help educate and inform, as this is a great way to spread agriculture’s message. While this may not be a traditional way of reaching people, it is important to remember that it isn’t how we get there that is important… it is what goes on once we get that matters.
Help spread the ever important message of agriculture. As cliché as it sounds… the future really does depend on it.
