For a nice change the radar was pretty quiet across the Midwest here early on this Thursday, and it is going to stay that way for the next couple of days. The past 24 hours though still featured a lot of rain and a lot of severe weather in parts of the region. Northern Illinois, northern Indiana, and northern Ohio were hit particularly hard by strong, straight-line winds (17 reports of winds of at least 75 miles per hour), with the area along Interstate 80 in Illinois seeing some heavy rains that were on the order of 1.50 to 3.00 inches in some spots. The next rainfall threat in the Midwest is for tomorrow night, impacting far northern parts of the region as warmer air returns to the Nation’s midsection. There will then be a threat of rain passing from the northwestern Corn Belt to the southeastern Corn Belt for Saturday night through early Monday as a cold front passes through the area. Once that frontal system passes, we are then still looking at welcome dry weather for all of the work-week period of next week, with temperatures mild (probably averaging below normal in that period for eastern parts of the Corn Belt). Even the Delta and the Southeast will see a break from their heat wave next week with temperatures averaging closer to normal, but what we would like to get for those areas is some rain. There is still looking to be some widely scattered rains around the heart of the Delta for today/tomorrow, and again for early next week as cooler air returns, but at this point the heart of the Delta may not get a big soaker that they want. Better rains over the next ten days are likely for the Southeast region. At some point it is still possible that the tropics will play a role in how the weather plays out, but weather models remain erratic and uncertain on tropical weather development, track and intensity for late this week and next week.
