Big rain has obviously been the big weather story in the Midwest so far this summer, but for next week the bigger story is going to be heat. Temperature conditions for today through Saturday in the Midwest will not be all that bad, with highs in most places in the 80s and lower dew point readings than have been seen in recent days. By Sunday though we will see highs climbing above the 90 degree mark in all but far northeastern parts of the Midwest (with dewpoint readings on the rise as well), with 95+ degree readings that day in the far west and far south. Once that gets established, it looks like highs of 90 or higher will be seen across much of the Midwest right through the end of the work-week period, and there will be days in which highs of 95 or higher are not uncommon with especially areas along and south of Interstate 70 reaching the 100 degree mark on more than one day. The bulk of the Midwest is going to have favorable (if not excessive) soil moisture heading into next week’s heat, but this type of heat is never favorable to crop prospects and certainly the pockets of the Midwest that have missed rain in recent weeks are going to suffer some stress. Stress has already been seen this week for crops in the Delta as highs have been above 100 for much of that area for the past five days (record high of 104 yesterday at Memphis; lots of record-high minimum temperature readings continue to be set) and we will make it six in a row for this Thursday. Heat will abate a little there for tomorrow and Saturday, and some rain will also be falling with Louisiana, southeastern Arkansas, the southern half or two-thirds of Mississippi, Alabama, and Georgia, and the eastern Carolinas seeing some very nice amounts that will total one to two inches. Heat will return to the Delta next week though; probably not quite as hot as this week but more days with highs around 100 degrees have to be expected.
