Central Iowa has certainly been the “bulls-eye” for rainfall so far in this month of August, and amounts have now become heavy enough where flooding there is rivaling (or in some cases exceeding) what was seen in the historic flood years of 1993 and 2008. Rainfall amounts of 1.50 to 4.00-plus inches have been recorded in that area since yesterday morning, with an area between Fort Dodge and Ames being especially hard-hit. Since Sunday night the area from Fort Dodge southeastward to Ottumwa (largely centered on the Des Moines River valley) has seen rain of four to ten inches and locally heavier. Rivers and streams in that area have risen or are expected to rise to levels where there is a threat that Interstates 35 and/or 80 will be closed to the north and to the east of Des Moines. That area will be getting a respite from the rain for today and tomorrow with dry conditions expected, but rains will move in again for Friday/Friday night (though there is hope that it will not be especially heavy). While central Iowa has been so wet, a large part of Missouri, central/southern Illinois, and southern Indiana has seen very little rain so far this month. With that area being the focus of the highest temperatures this month as well, it is an area where crops have been under stress (and will continue to be under stress, with hot temperatures there through Saturday) and need rainfall rather badly. That is not an area that I think is in a real favorable position for rainfall from now through the end of the weekend, and could see below normal rainfall (albeit with much cooler temperatures) for next week. The cool-down for next week, centered on the Monday to Thursday time frame, does look impressive and should give the Midwest its coolest temperatures since early this summer (if not even earlier than that). It should be a brief cool-down though, with temperatures returning to above normal levels for the last week of this month.
