The video shows pickles being harvested on about 75 acres owned by Randy Goodwin, from Wanatah, Indiana. He cultivates the ground, irrigates, will spray if necessary; does everything but plant and harvest. He is guaranteed 150 bushel/acre yield, but on this day, they have already hauled 7 semi loads at 50,000 pounds per load. The fields are wet, so the trucks are parked on the road. They will replant the field in two days, and grow a second crop.
James Hartung leases the land. He and his family have similar leases on 12,000 acres from Texas to Michigan. These pickles will go to Bowling Green, Ohio. They’ll be sorted and graded. Either a canning company will buy them right away, or they will process them, tank and brine them, and sell them later.
Watching the entire process probably make you think twice the next time you place a pickle on your burger.
