With rainfall keeping daytime temperatures just in the 60s in a lot of Iowa, and with the rest of the region seeing highs just in the 70s and 80s, yesterday was the coolest day for the Midwest in a number of weeks. Summer is not over with just yet though, as we are going to be on a warming trend again for late this week and into early next week that will take temperatures easily above normal once again. By the weekend and into Monday, most anyone in the Midwest (except for the far northeast) will be flirting with the 90 degree mark once again, and the normal “hot spots” in the south could be flirting with 100 degrees. It will be cooler for the middle of next week, but probably warm up rather quickly once again after that so on average we are looking at above-normal temperatures for the rest of this month in the Midwest. For a lot of the Midwest, that same time period is not looking very wet either. The next weather system to monitor will be for late tonight through a portion of Saturday. With that system having the potential for severe weather, that means that about anyone in the Midwest can see a “localized” good rain. Any “widespread” good rains though look to be mostly over the eastern Dakotas eastward through Minnesota, Wisconsin, and northern Michigan. Cooler weather for Tuesday of next week should also mean a rainfall threat, but it too will probably favor the western and/or northwestern Corn Belt. When looking at the weather that has been seen so far this month, and the weather that we have coming up, this month of August will not be very favorable for crops in parts of the eastern Corn Belt. If the forecast shown above (which takes us practically to the end of August) were to verify, especially eastern Illinois, southern Michigan, far northern as well as the southern half of Indiana, and scattered locations in Ohio and Missouri will record August temperatures a solid distance above normal with August rainfall a good distance below normal.
