In episode 10 of Corn College TV, Farm Journal Field Agronomist Ken Ferrie reports that automated steering has come of age.
“I have yet to work with a farmer who have used automated steering systems and then returned it,” he says. “They’ve either switched out some of its components or upgraded because it’s an addictive technology.”
He continues that it’s not a tool in the farmer’s toolbox that will directly increase yields, but it will decrease fatigue while increasing awareness.
“Especially during the planting pass, these systems allow the farmer to pay attention to the planter and make sure it’s doing what it needs to do,” he says. “At harvest, with dusty soybean field conditions in particular, it helps manage those days better.”
