Through the rest of the year, visitors to the Indiana State Museum can harvest corn in the Case IH combine simulator. One of the highlights of “Amazing Maze” visitors can also take advantage of a variety of interactive features, including a seven-foot high display of corn-based products, including M&Ms candies, packing peanuts, cereal and more.

The Case IH simulator allows visitors of all ages to experience what it’s like from the seat of a combine when a farmer is harvesting a field of corn. Visitors can steer the wheel of the simulated combine, or direct the combine’s functions with the MultiControl Armrest, complete with an AFS Pro 600 display unit, which is used to show yield and moisture readings and GPS positioning.
Other displays explain how the corn plant’s genome has evolved over thousands of years and how scientists develop new corn traits.  Divided into six sections, “Amazing Maize” follows a 10,000-year genetic journey showing the evolution of the corn plant, starting with the ancient Mesoamericans domesticating a teosinte plant and selecting it for specific traits. One interactive feature shows visitors how domestication took place over the years, with a video from geneticist Dr. John Doebley, who first positively identified teosinte as the ancestor of today’s corn plant.

Thanks to innovations in the cellphone industry, the phone you’re carrying around today is definitely much “smarter” than the one you had 10 years ago. So it goes with farm equipment technology –- steady advances over the years have raised your farm tractor’s IQ, too.
Case IH is one of the latest companies to upgrade its technology offerings, with Case IH AFS Connect. Beginning March 1, dealers began retrofitting the new packages on fleets of both Case IH and competitive equipment. These packages have multiple features that result in saved time and improved overall efficiency, according to company officials.
Check out Agweb.com to view a video featuring Case IH senior director of specialty business Bill Preller. He discusses many of these features in greater detail.

High-tech equipment boosts efficiency when labor is tight

One of the early adopters of on-board, module-building pickers, Andrew Burleson is now self-sufficient when it comes to harvesting cotton. He’s also planting more of it.

In 2008, Burleson bought a Case IH on-board, module-building picker, which makes modules about half the size of conventional ones. In 2010, he bought a John Deere on-board, module-building picker, which creates round, 6,000-lb. modules, and now runs three of them.

“These pickers have allowed us to plant and harvest more cotton on our own, cut labor costs and limit risk and liability,” says Burleson, who grows 2,500 acres of cotton and 1,000 acres of corn, soybeans and wheat in Richfield, N.C.

Some producers in the mid-South sold off their conventional equipment when cotton prices languished in the mid-2000s to grow higher-priced corn and soybeans. The new pickers could convince them to return to cotton, particularly now that cotton prices have staged a strong recovery.

“The ability to buy one of these machines makes it easier for people to say, ‘I’m going to come back to cotton,’” says Ed Barnes, director of agricultural and environmental research for Cotton Incorporated.

This summer farmers got the first look at the Case IH Magnum 370 geared with a continuously variable transmission (CVT). At Agritechnica, Case IH is displaying a version of that tractor that’s closer to its production model. The current 235, 260, 290, 315 and 340 models also have the CVT option. The Magnum 370 is powered by an 8.7-liter Case IH FPT engine, which delivers up to 419 maximum boosted engine horsepower.

To better illustrate the Case IH CVT, a dynamic cut away was in the booth. This allows farmers to see the inner mechanics and how it responds to the operator to achieve greater efficiency.
