Farm Equipment Attracting Investment, Especially for International Expansion

Evidence continues to mount that ag is an attractive place to invest these days. News during the past few weeks has reinforced the trend of international investments in agriculture — especially in farm equipment.
While many of the deals are coming from within the industry, a high level of interest is coming from financial investment firms that see agriculture as a good place to put their money.
Oxbo International Corp. in the U.S. and Ploeger Agro B.V. of the Netherlands merged to create the world’s largest specialty harvesting equipment company. Here’s a quick rundown of activity that’s taken place in just the past few weeks:
- CNH struck a strategic alliance with Brazilian company Semeato to provide planters and drills for the South American market.
- AGCO purchased GSI Holdings Corp. from affiliates of Centerbridge Partners, L.P. GSI manufactures grain storage and protein production systems. AGCO cited international expansion as well as synergies in North America as reasons for the acquisition.
- Both Deere and AGCO announced expansion plans in South America. AGCO also acquired a sugarcane harvester manufacturer.

Case New Holland (CNH), a global leader in the agricultural and construction equipment business, today announced a new strategic partnership with Semeato, the Brazilian market leader in attachments and agricultural machinery, specializing in technologies for no-till planting and seeding of grains.
This partnership will allow the two companies to make further use of their respective areas of expertise: CNH with tractors, sprayers, combines, forage and other agricultural equipment of all classes and power ranges; and Semeato with leading technology on planters and seeders in Latin America.
The CNH – Semeato strategic long-term partnership will involve several collaboration areas to continuously drive CNH leadership in the Latin American market.
Semeato products will be sold branded Semeato, Case IH and New Holland Agriculture through the respective dealer networks.
In addition, the engineering departments of the two companies will develop products jointly, designed to maximize performance of the CNH tractor lines.
“Case New Holland is committed to providing its Latin American clients with leading products in the sector which meet the highest standards of performance and productivity,” asserted Harold Boyanovsky, CEO and President of CNH.
“Our partnership with Semeato – one of the most respected companies in the Brazilian agricultural machinery sector – is a sign of our intention not only to be at the forefront of planting technology, but also to be a leader in this sector. Through this agreement, CNH is able to offer planters and seeders which are suited to the needs of our clients, whatever the client may require, regardless of size or activity within agribusiness,” Boyanovsky added.
“We are very excited about the prospect of leveraging our market leadership positions for the benefits of our customers in Latin America and beyond,” Roberto Rossato, CEO and President of Semeato. “Our products will create a powerful innovative solution to meet evolving customer demands.”

AGCO CEO Says CNH Deal Talk was ‘Theoretical’
Posted in News, tagged Ag, Ag News, AGCO, CNH, farm, Mergers, News on December 14, 2010 | Leave a Comment »
The head of AGCO Corp said on Thursday that comments he made earlier this week about wanting to buy portions of CNH Global NV were strictly academic because Fiat SpA views the farm and construction equipment subsidiary as “strategically important” and has no plans to sell it.
On Wednesday, Fiat shares touched a 30-month high after AGCO Chairman and Chief Executive Martin Richenhagen told the Italian business newspaper MF that he was interested in CNH and had met with Fiat’s Chief Executive Sergio Marchionne 10 days ago.
Richenhagen said in an exclusive interview with Reuters on Thursday that “in case, if, theoretically CNH would become available, we would, of course, be interested. It would be stupid not to be interested.”
But he said investors should not get excited about the possibility of a deal “because Marchionne doesn’t want to sell.”

To maximize the value of their investment, many savvy farmers are holding onto equipment longer. Inevitably, with their extended hours of operation, these machines will wear down and likely require major repairs. The question is, when you’re already trying to manage your costs, how much do you really want to invest in an aging machine, and how long can you expect those repairs to last?
For situations like this, it’s nice to have alternatives to new Original Equipment (OE). Rebuilds are a more budget-friendly option – but only if the repair can hold up. After all, the goal is to extend the time of these older machines in the field, not in the shop. That’s why CNH is going above and beyond with their Reman (remanufactured) parts line to ensure that customers have options that deliver the level of performance their machines—and their business—depend on.
The difference is all about the process. For example, with most rebuilds, parts are only disassembled to the point of failure and then, only the failed part is replaced. Yet problems stemming from a failed part can often impact surrounding parts. To avoid future problems, you need to address every component. With Reman, parts are completely disassembled and each and every component is checked against strict OE specifications. Any failed parts are refurbished and machined to like-new quality or replaced with 100% genuine OE parts where necessary. As an added bonus, the Reman process updates early generation parts (whenever possible) to the latest engineering specifications resulting in a repair that can actually improve the performance of older equipment. Little perks like this can also help to increase the resale value of your machines when choosing Reman over rebuilds.
It’s worth noting the risk of choosing a rebuild or repair instead of Reman. These processes depend on reverse-engineered data and may use parts with differing quality and make up. These slight differences attempting to work together in your machine can lead to catastrophic failure. Due to the immense stress of agricultural equipments’ inner workings, parts demand exact engineering to perform to the levels as designed by the manufacturer. Furthermore, a seemingly minor difference in machining can lead to major problems when put under a heavy load. CNH tests Reman parts against OE specifications thereby guaranteeing they’ll fit and function perfectly. Not only that, but because they come ready as drop-in assemblies, Reman parts install faster, helping to reduce the cost of labor.
But without a doubt, one of the most convincing reasons to choose remanufactured parts from your equipments’ manufacturer over rebuilds is the warranty coverage. Most repairs and rebuilds only offer limited warranties and only on the repaired part. On the other hand, because Reman parts are tested and built to operate like OE parts, they typically offer “same-as-new” coverage. CNH Reman is even able to offer “better-than-new” warranty options on parts and labor in some instances. This extended coverage is exactly what heavily used machines need.
Whatever option you decide to go with when you need a repair, consider the benefits of using a certified OE dealer to do it. Their mechanics have been trained on the products; they have the right diagnostic and special tools required to do the job; they have access to all the latest repair and service information; and they can typically complete the repair in less time than a mechanic that isn’t certified to work on the machine.
CNH is redefining what a rebuild should be with their remanufactured parts line. It’s the smart way to extend the life of a machine without compromising quality.
